#tonightsbill: August 2015
I unconsciously took July off from the theatre. I didn't realize it until I sat down last month to write this post that between going home for two weeks, and enjoying other social activities here in the city I hadn't made it to a single show. And ya know what? That was fine by me. This spring I was seeing a LOT of shows (no complaints!) and I think my brain needed a break. But when John Lampe asks if you want to take a picnic to Central Park to see Cymbeline, you GO!
And what a beautiful day we had for it too! #blueskyblooms
I've said this before, and I'll say it again. It wouldn't be a day at Shakespeare in the Park without Paul Fluteman/Saxman helping to keep it real. Real cool.
There's something about seeing theatre in this place that just takes your breath away.
I really enjoyed this show. I had never seen it or read it but the entire cast was wonderful. It was particularly enjoyable to see so many of them double cast in rolls very opposite from each other. I mean, does't want to see actors play against type? The show is closed now, but I hope you got an opportunity to see it.
P.S. I got tickets to both Shakespeare in the Park shows this year from the Cancelation Line. Instead of lining up in the middle of the night and waiting until noon, the line starts forming around 3:30 and you get your tickets 15-20 min before curtain. It's the perfect opportunity to catch up with friends or do a little work under a shady tree. Just saying...
I know what you're saying, "Hedwig? Again?" And yes, Hedwig again. What can I say I've really come to love this show. And when you add in Taye Diggs and my friend Madeline who had yet to see the show than you get "Hedwig! Again!"
Hedwig Taye.0 was great. Vocally he was a lot more soul than rock, but that was to be expected. And it changed my perspective on things in an interesting way. Taye's Hedwig was very physical; by far the most masculine Hedwig I've seen. Which I liked because it was different and forced you to really see the broken, male side of Her the whole time.
Humor and new jokes were on point. You could tell the big black woman inside JCM was just DYING to get these jokes out into the world. Plus, Madeline had a blast! It was so fun to get to watch her experiencing this world for the first time. They posted their closing notice only a few days after we saw it so RUN to get your tickets! #savehedwig
After not seeing any shows in July I had a bit of a surplus in my budget, so I decided to spring for a ticket to Fun Home!
I love Circle in the Square, and I love how this photo turned out. :)
This is one of those times I got to go home earlier in the day and change clothes to look nice for the theatre. I love when this happens. I enjoy the performance more, and I feel like I am doing my part to be respectful towards the artists I'm about to see perform. Call me old school but I wish more people dressed up for the theatre. I love feeling like it's an event, even if it's only Wednesday evening.
I really enjoyed the show. The performances were perfect. The music was great. And the show has a fluidity to it that seems effortless. I have a copy of the book and the script I was waiting to read until I'd seen the show, and the same goes for the soundtrack. As I delve into those and start to peel back more of it's layers that's when the real fun will begin.
What did you see last month? I want to know! -xo Sydney
